New Football Field In The Park
This time in far corner by Cayton Grove. All the goal-posts and white lines are there - seems like a full-sized one!

From Erdington Conservatives - `Gareth, Robert and Bob have been working with local PCSO's and youth workers from Urban Devotion to deliver new football posts on Short Heath Park. They have been installed near to the Topcroft to encourage children to use the park rather than playing in the street. Robert said "Thank you to the PCSO's and Urban Devotion without whom we could not have got this done."'

Active Parks
Active Parks provides free physical activity opportunities for local people through Birmingham's network of parks and open spaces. A key strand of Birmingham City Council’s Wellbeing Service, the scheme is run in conjunction with the friends of parks networks across the city, supported by Birmingham Open Spaces Forum.

All Active Parks activities are: free, fun, local, welcoming, and suitable for beginners -

Soon Everything Will Change is a new temporary public project by artist Joanna Rajkowska, conceived in and for Erdington. STM Club - Topcroft, Jarvis Road and Court Farm
STM Club is a great place for children and young people from the Topcroft, Jarvis Road and Court Farm estates to hang out. STM Club is based at St Margaret's Church on Jarvis Road and provides space for football, XBox 360, games, personal development activities and a tuck shop. It's a fantastic space to hang out in and allows our team the chance to get to know some of the fantastic children and young people from the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Save Our Play Areas - campaign by Er
dington Conservatives;

Cllrs Gareth Moore and Robert Alden

Revolt sees Council back down on plans to close 22 play-areas. A REVOLT by councillors has seen a decision to close play areas across Birmingham including two in Erdington reversed. Birmingham City Council had planned to close 22 play areas in the city, including a well-used one in Rookery Park and another at the junction of Windsor Place and Tudor Gardens in a bid to save £100, 000.

In a letter from the Sport, Events and Parks department to councillors it said: "As a part of the Council Budget Consultation and the Parks Service budget savings for 2014/15, we have identified the removal of a very small percentage of our play areas city wide. This proposal will provide the service with a saving of £100k to meet our overall saving target of £702k in 2014/15.

"The removal proposals are designed to deal with our lower graded facilities, and to ensure we make an informed decision each play area has been scored to determine which play areas should be removed."

The play areas were scored on factors including vandalism, alternative sources of funding, level of use, quality and age of equipment and other play areas in the ward.

Erdington councillor, Robert Alden, was 'delighted' the council reversed its proposal to close Rookery Park play area and 21 others - "In the Erdington Ward, the small play area of the two existing has been identified the removal, this is located at Rookery Park."

But councillors railed against the proposals, with Erdington councillors immediately starting a petition to call-for, a reversal. A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council said: "Members were consulted about the future of 22 play areas across the city as part of a wider review of services provided by the districts in order to meet the council's savings targets. The overwhelming majority of councillors objected to these proposals and so none of the play areas identified will be closing."

Erdington councillor Robert Alden, who leads the Conservative opposition, said: "We are delighted that our campaign has been able to bring enough pressure to have the council drop the plans to close the play areas in Rookery Park, Windsor Place and Wheeldon Recreation Ground [in Kongstanding]. We had already collected hundreds of names of supporters who wanted the play areas to stay open and objected to the council. The fact they have now been dropped shows the council realised how crazy the closures were. Residents remain concerned at how anyone could think closing play areas like Rookery Park in the first place was sensible. However we will not be resting on this success. Cllr Bob Beauchamp, Cllr Gareth Moore, Tyburn campaigner, Clifton Welch and myself will still be campaigning to ensure that the Labour Council does not reintroduce this planned closure in a few months when the public outcry has died down. If you would like to support the campaign you can add your name to our petition to keep our play areas open at - "

Entertaining Erdington Scheme - Latest
A new initiative as part of Town Hall and Symphony Hall’s work as Birmingham City Council Arts Champions for the Erdington district. The scheme offers cut price tickets for Erdington residents to a very wide range of shows. The latest shows are here;

New Gym In The Park
Not exactly Venice Beach in California, but a new set of gym-equipment has been placed in Short Heath Park and the adjacent play-area has been made bigger.

From Erdington Conservatives;

`Residents will be aware that Bob, Robert and Gareth have been working hard to keep improving the local park since being elected to the Council. Following work done with local children in the area to secure funding, topped up by money from Community Chest, the play area has now been improved and enlarged to include an outdoor gym in Short Heath Park. Cllr Bob Beauchanap said:

"The new new outdoor gym's play area and outdoor gym's are brilliant additions to the local park. We are delighted that the work was completed, on time, on budget and to such a high standard. We will keep working to improve all the parks in Erdington ward to the same standard".

Cllr Robert Alden added:

"Short Heath Park is very important to us as it provides a key out door space for local people, who deserve the park to be of the highest quality".

Previously secured improvements for Short Heath park - New attractive railings around the park. New path through the park. Solar lights for the path. Car Park resurfaced with a low railing to be added around the car park soon. Playground fence fixed. New trees planated.

This winter saw your local Councillors team up with The friends of Short Heath Park, Birmingham City Council Parks team, Birmingham trees for life and Court Farm Primary School to plant new trees in the park. This was possible following money secured by the Friends of the Park and your local Councillors from Birmingham trees for life, through the Government to fund the new trees.

Bob, a governor at Court Farm School, added

"The children helped plant the trees and placed a time capsule under ground for future generations."'

The SETI thing (trying to find alien radio/TV signals etc) originated from the fact that it was calculated that the data being collected was so vast there weren't enough computers in universities etc to process it. Some bright spark said why not utilise every home PC in the world too by making the data processing program a screen-saver! Each person gets little bits to process, sends it back on completion, gets some more. Somehow it works!

SETI, SETI@home, or (as a team)

I'll add more game links that are community based etc.

Bats in the Park
There are bats in Short Heath Park and have been for years now, in the trees up by the OLD play area. They only come out at night and they do fly very low (they aren't dangerous of course). Their "sonar" is excellent and they won't hit you, even if you react first (which you do when one's flying at your face!) and move into their path as they alter their's on detecting you or move into it's path if one is flying wide of you. Spooky at first but quite nice. I don't know why they've settled there though. The dark makes it difficult to get on film I've found.

This is the Bat Conservation Trust site if anyone wants to do research;
